Last month the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center (WKCAC) had a special visitor- a human powered submarine! The wooden submarine is powered by two scuba diving pilots who pedal to provide power and propel the submarine forward.

The submarine was put together by the University of Washington Human Powered Submarine Team, a student-run team made up of engineering students from across the UW College of Engineering. They work to design, manufacture, and test a human-powered submarine to compete in international submarine races against other universities. This summer, they will be going to Gosport, England to compete in the 4th Biennial European International Submarine Races.

WKCAC has been used as a test facility throughout the year for the submarine. Most recently, it was used for a fun photo shoot for a web spotlight (see photo above).

WKCAC is a legacy venue of the 1990 Seattle Goodwill Games. This 2,500-seat facility maintains one of the most active competition schedules in the country, hosting more than 50 events annually. It has been the site of Olympic Trials, top national and international competitions, and the Pacific Northwest’s premiere events. In addition to the swimming and diving events, WKCAC is open to the public for lap swims, family swims, swimming lessons and more.
