About the project
Through our Community Partnerships and Grants Program (CPG), King County Parks has been working with the Mt Peak Historical Fire Lookout Association to design, fund, and build a lookout tower at the top of Mount Peak. The design is reminiscent of the fire lookout tower that was decommissioned in 1966.
The Mt Peak Historical Fire Lookout Association is a community-based organization that formed in 2016 with the goal of enhancing the visitor experience at Pinnacle Peak Park and paying homage to the area’s history through the construction and maintenance of the tower.
The tower is roughly the same scale as the one that stood in 1966, with a 20-foot by 20-foot view deck approximately 30 feet off the ground. From the deck, visitors will have stunning views of Mount Rainier and the Port of Tacoma, along with sweeping views of the valley and foothills.
Funding for this project includes $295,000 from King County Parks’ CPG Program to the Mt. Peak Historical Fire Lookout Association, which matched that with $1,305,000 in grants and in-kind services and donations.
