Photo Diary of the Dick Thurnau Memorial Park Dedication Ceremony

Last weekend, King County Parks and the White Center community celebrated the renaming of Lakewood Park to Dick Thurnau Memorial Park at the TAF: Bethaday Learning Center. The afternoon was filled with stories, music, park tours and BBQ. Check out some photos from the event below.

Students from Cascade International Band kicked off the afternoon with some jazzy tunes.
Councilmember Joe McDermott (left), Parks Director Kevin Brown (upper right) and various community members highlighted the many accomplishments of Mr. Thurnau.
Thurnau’s family members unveiled the new park signs.
Pictured: the infamous Hicklin Lake. Thurnau tirelessly fought to improve the water quality of the lake he once swam in. Thanks to his insistent efforts, King County Parks installed a floating wetland treatment system which will improve the water quality in a natural way. More information on the project can be found here. 
Members of Cascade Middle School’s Drug and Alcohol Prevention Team facilitated tours of the park, a popular destination for Disc golf. The students informed us that there is still a lot of work to do – last week they picked up a whopping 667 cigarette butts.
As the afternoon came to a end everyone gathered for a scrumptious BBQ and shared stories of Thurnau’s memorable personality.
