Once upon a time about a month ago, a quiet little ceremony celebrated the official opening of a new half-mile loop trail on the north end of Vashon Island. This trail warrants a special shout-out due to the fact it is King County Parks’ only backcountry trail specifically designed for people who use wheelchairs and walkers, which makes a whole lot of sense given that the trail stretches Vashon Community Center, a local assisted living facility, and Shinglemill Creek Preserve.

This flat, pedestrian-only trail was made possible thanks to the Vashon Land Trust who bought the property with funds from King County’s Conservation Futures grant program, and King County Parks’ Community Partnership and Grants program which funded the trail construction.
