Sports fans and transit enthusiasts have plenty to cheer about in 2026. From the World Cup to Sound Transit trains crossing Lake Washington, Puget Sound is buzzing with big milestones. And here at King County Parks, we’re adding one more to the list: the transformation of the Wilburton Trestle into a breathtaking elevated trail in Bellevue.

A Century-Old Landmark Gets New Life
Built in 1904, the Wilburton Trestle is a true piece of history, stretching over 1,000 feet long and more than 100 feet high. Last year, we began the ambitious work of converting this 122-year-old wooden railroad structure into a modern trail that will serve as a key link in the 42-mile Eastrail network. This regional trail will connect communities from South and East King County all the way to Snohomish County, with a spur to Redmond.
What Does It Take to Transform a Trestle?

What does it take to turn a 122-year-old wooden railroad trestle into an 18-foot-wide trail with three expansive viewpoints? If you’ve ever worked on an old house, you already know it includes some “fun” surprises.
Crews are replacing significant amounts of deteriorated wood while carefully preserving the structure’s historic character. At the same time, we’re reinforcing the trestle with modern safety upgrades designed to improve resilience during earthquakes.
To get all this work done construction crews are using multiple large cranes, including a 1979 railroad crane that that looks straight out of Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel.
Building the Future Trail
The first step to building the trail atop the trestle? Removing the old railroad decking. Next, we’ll install large concrete panels on new cross beams to create a solid base for the trail. And don’t worry — at 18 feet wide with high railings, the finished trail will feel safe and spacious, even for those who aren’t fans of heights.

What’s Next for the Trestle?
We’re excited to keep sharing progress photos as this transformation unfolds. We can’t wait to welcome you in mid-2027 when the Wilburton Trestle officially opens as part of Eastrail. Until then, explore the beautiful sections of Eastrail that are already open — you’ll love what’s out there!
More Eastrail Coming – I-90 Trail Segment
Alongside our work on the Wilburton Trestle, we’re also designing a new 1.7‑mile segment of Eastrail that will cross Interstate 90 in Bellevue. This future stretch, located just south of the iconic trestle, will create a seamless connection between Renton and Bellevue.
