Field Notes: Reports from The Long Walk

Long Walkers resting in Magnuson Park after Day 1

Our very own Cristina Gonzalez, intrepid deputy finance manager, decided to tag along on The Long Walk, a 45-mile pedestrian adventure from Puget Sound to Snoqualmie Falls along King County’s Regional Trails System. Sponsored by 4Culture and led by artist Susan Robb, this is the trek’s second year.

From Thursday, July 28 – Sunday, July 31, the “Long Walkers”, a group of about 50 participants, will walk, camp, experience, and be inspired by the sights, sounds, and senses of the trails.

Join the Long Walkers on Friday, July 29, for the Mid-Point Mash-Upat McCormick Park in Duvall from 7:30 – 9:30 pm.

KC Parks own Cristina Gonzalez, still smiling after 48 miles of The Long Walk

Here are some of Cristina’s updates from the trail (we’ll keep adding more as we get ’em):

July 31, 5:00 pm

We have arrived! Forty-eight miles along King County’s Regional Trails System…and now we rest (and take care of our wounds)!

July 31, 10:53 am

The very aptly name Long Walk continues on day four on the Snoqualmie Valley Trail. We will walk (probably in the rain!) another twelve miles today to end at Snoqualmie Falls…whew, what an adventure this has been!

July 30, 12:06 pm

Took a quick break along the Snoqualmie Valley Trail. It’s only nine miles today on this lovely, quiet, private part of our regional trails system. We will end up this afternoon at King County’s Tolt-MacDonald Park.

Reaching the Sammamish River Trail

July 29, 11:54 am

Our walk takes us to…the Sammamish River Trail. Beautiful part of the county. I loved the view, just before  crossing a bridge. Must be a peaceful place to live.

July 29, 9:22 am

We’ll start our 15-mile walk to McCormick Park from Kenmore, after riding the mini-ferry, piloted by Captain Larry. And we get ice cream shakes on the ride! Also, thank you to Whole Foods and Caffe Vita for the lovely breakfast!*

July 28, 11:53 am

We have arrived at Magnuson! After six hours of walking, the first batch of walkers arrived, most with sore feet (hence the foot soaking!)

July 28, 8:32 am

Only two hours of walking gets us from Golden Gardens to Gasworks Park! Amazing how many people are on the trail at these early hours!

*Note: Due to the closure of the Burke-Gilman Trail for construction near Lake Forest Park, the Long Walkers opted for a water detour, hopping a boat from Magnuson to Long Boom Park.
